The 2026 European Reading Challenge

Read more European books, Laurie. That’s why I am joining The Rose City Reader’s European reading Challenge. I am very US/England centric and I really need to branch out a little. Sure, once in while I’ll read a classic from the continent, but I’d also like to read more modern/contemporary books. So this challenge should open me up a bit. As you can see from what I have on my shelves they are mostly older titles, but I hope to read more in this century.

From the website, here is THE GIST: The idea is to read books set in European countries or books by European authors. The books can be of any genre – fiction, nonfiction, novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, whatever. You can participate at different levels, but each book must represent a different country — either written by an author from a different country or set in a different country, no two books from the same country. It’s supposed to be a tour!

  1. Spain-Don Quixote
  2. Russia-Resurrection
  3. France-The Ladies Paradise
  4. Iceland-Deceit
  5. Ireland-The Dubliners
  6. Austria-King Solomon’s Ring

  1. I’m in the European Reading Challenge and also chose Don Quixote as one of the books, plus another Russian choice (The Brothers Karamazov). We have similar tastes! I will be following along to see what you think of them and maybe compare notes.
