Happy 250th, Jane!

I posted a story on Instagram today about Sense and Sensibility being my comfort book. I didn’t realize this is the date of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday. Then I saw all the tributes and want to share mine.

If Jane Austen knew when she started writing as a young girl that not only would she continue to write and publish and that her work would be celebrated in 2025, what would she think?

I would want her to know it is because she is a window. That she shows us her world, not only its daily life, but in its thoughts and feelings. The characters she created with their hopes and dreams, fears, anguishes and trepidation are what we see in ourselves as we read her “old” books.

She is a window and a gap-bridger between centuries that shows us how similar we still are. She is the epitome, in my opinion, of why classic literature will always be relevant.

I also think she would love her Lego Jane! (see above Jane Austen’s England)
